Beyond the obvious significance of the book for the economic history of the region, this is a monograph on the city of Smyrna in a broader sense. Drawing on an exhaustive survey of available literature- including many archival sources which have not hitherto been consulted by scholars- the author attempts to recreate for her reader the economic and social environment of one of the great cities of the Levant. Thus is a book which addresses itself not only to technical issues pertaining to the economic and social history of the Ottoman Empire, but is of interest also to a wider community of scholars studying the civilization of the Ottoman Empire and the Near East.
